I keep looking at this photo of Katherine Heigl (click to enlarge), trying to decide what exactly bothers me about her. After all, the eye makeup is really nice, a smoky eye done right. But then there's the smoker's skin, the over-bronzing and the weird updo.
What do you think?

the heavy inner-eye highlighting doesn't help either... that can go down the creepy path really easily if not subtle.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the color of her face matches her neck/chest -- her collarbones are so dark compared to her face that it just doesn't look right. I mean, I guess they brought the foundation down onto the front of her neck to try to blend face and body, but they didn't go all the way down and over.
ReplyDeleteWell, I think Heigl is one of those celebrities who look really unremarkable without that elaborate make-up...
ReplyDeleteWhat is "smoker's skin?" I've never heard that term before, what does it mean?
ReplyDeleteIt is a disaster, she looks like a wife from Dynasty, very Eighties look. OMG, she is a young woman, isn't she, so where's the youthfulness, lusciousness? We call this look "old-young" here. The bad thing is that this youthfulness is missing not only in her look, but also in her eyes.
ReplyDeletelavinia
Her eye make-up has a faitn green/aqua hue to it, even if just the lighting, that is bad, and I don't think the eye make-up goes well at all with her brown eyes and eyebrows. Her face is a bit lighter than her body, but not horribly so (I had to enlarge to see this). But to me the big killer is the hair - no make-up job could look right with that, and then the color and style of the dress along with it give a "bad" 80's look.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I think it's the second time I stumble upon "smoker's skin" on your blog and I wanted to ask what you mean, like another reader above. (I usually associate it with ashy, wrinkled skin, but she must be very young, right?) Honestly, I think it's just that she's overall big-pored and hasn't discovered the benefits of a little powdering yet. (big pores and highlighters/luminisers don't go well usually).
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Lady Jane Grey above that she is not really remarkable without makeup: I mean, we always see her with something really making a statement in terms of make-up, right? Not that she's bad-looking because she's not, but not really "wow" (ie.Jolie) or naturally beautiful (ie. Theron).
"Old-young"....feh, young people are desperate to look older sometimes and then they regret it when they do become older.
How unfortunate. Not that my makeup is flawless (or even symmetrical) by any stretch of the imagination, but I would call this the train wreck of plum blush meets monster mascara (Volumizing! Lengthening! Curling! Invading Tokyo!). A cautionary tale indeed.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to avoid the skin/make-up issue...it's gotta be tough to be examined in ECU (extreme close up).
ReplyDeleteI *will*, however, note that there is something peculiar, like a wind from the west, that's sending her earrings and hair over to the right side of the frame. Hmmmm. (Maybe THAT's really what is striking you as odd??)
The eyelashes has too much mascara.
ReplyDeleteThe eye shadow color matches too much the color of the dress.
The smile is too much.
In general, it is too much of everything.
Kamo, I know what you mean. The inner-eye highlighting can be lovely when it's just a hint of light, while here it takes up about 1/3 of the area. It's competing with the rest of the makeup, and not winning.
ReplyDeleteJeanne, I wasn't sure if the color difference was real or a lighting issue, but maybe it's just that the face color looks too fake.
ReplyDeleteLady Jane, as far as I remember, when she's not made up to the nines, she's usually photographed chain-smokin and quite cranky... Definitely not a remarkable style icon.
ReplyDeleteAnon 1 and Helg, it often looks like heavy smokers (even young ones) tend to have a rough skin texture, compared to non-smokers. It's a generalization, and not everyone shows these signs, but think of Cameron Diaz (acne issues aside), Britney Spears or Sienna Miller.
ReplyDeleteThe toxins and other crap in cigarette smoke are known to make skin look dull (it gets less oxygen) and settle into pores. It looks like Katherine here is a good example.
Lavinia, I think you've nailed it: bothe the 80s vibe and the lack vivaciousness.
ReplyDeleteGail, I also dislike the garish dress color. Definitely too 80s.
ReplyDeleteHelg, I agree- she's definitely not one of the most beautiful Hollywood women, but I do remember photos from the beginning of her career (only a couple of years ago, so it's not about aging) and she looked more natural and just prettier.
ReplyDeleteOblitterati, I really hope to see an end to the porn lashes trend. No one needs to look like they have a wild animal habitat on their face.
ReplyDeleteScentscelf, I haven't noticed the thing with the earrings until you mentioned it. You're right, of course.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I do feel sorry for celebs that are being so closely examined and scrutinized. I hope the paycheck and fame make up for it.
Anon 2, yes, everything here is overdone. Like a cartoon celeb.
ReplyDeleteI generally do not like a silvery smokey eye on blondes.
ReplyDeleteI am blonde and will not use silver. Shimmery white? Yes. Dark charcoal? Yes. But if I do smokey I use the charcoal and navy, or dark olive green and dark chocolate brown. Never silver.
I discovered that about me in high school when I had my makeup done at the Chanel counter - it looked a lot like the eye in this pick. Nothing wrong with the technique or colors themselves...just not pleasing against my blonde eyebrows and hair.
I've got blue eyes, but have to say that the silver does nothing to help her brown eyes either...
The face is too light and the ELVIS hair has got to GO !!
ReplyDeleteEyes too f a r apart.
ReplyDeleteToo much and too harsh makeup, unsuitable hair style for a youngish woman, but I don't find her extremely attractive in the first place. Her lip color sucks all the color out of her face, too. She should not be wearing a neutral. I think the visible pores are either smoker's skin or sun damage, and while unfortunate, are hard to camouflage - powder just makes you look even older and more deathly.
ReplyDeleteGretchen, you've got the right idea regarding subtle colors for smoky eyes. I'm much darker than Katherine and I prefer something less harsh. And silver can look overdone on just about everyone if not applied very very carefully.
ReplyDeleteCarol, you made me laugh with the Elvis thing. So true!
ReplyDeleteNancy, I'm starting to really feel sorry for poor Katherine...
ReplyDelete(and you've got something there. Jackie O was probablie the only one who could make eyes so far apart look beautiful)
Elizabeth, maybe a good primer would have made her skin look better. And I agree about the washed out lip color. This beige thing rarely works.
ReplyDeleteThat's it! You hit on it exactly - smoker's skin. That should be a new category somewhere. By the way ... head over to Hello Dollface! blog to see what's on the other side of that updo - horrendous.
ReplyDeleteWell those eyelashes resemble twin black widow spiders perched on her eyes. Eek!
ReplyDeleteawww, I think so many of these comments are mean :-(. how would you like to be scrutinized in a zoomed in high def photo? I don't even know what y'all are talking about with the smoker's skin - her skin looks normal to me-just b/c she has large pores does not make her a smoker. I have huge pores, her size or bigger& I've never smoked. I can understand if you don't like the hair style, but all this criticism is unnecessary, I mean does this mean we always expect celebrities to be photoshopped and have the perfect but fake image?
