Three Looks From Cannes Film Festival

Gwen Stefani went where she's rarely gone before with a shocking pink lipstick. I like it, as well as the rest of her fearless makeup look. But is it just me who wishes she'd go a couple of shades darker with her hair? I think she'd look much more sophisticated with a little less bleach.

Beautiful actress Fan Bing Bing experimented with this Southern Belle look. The dress is Scarlett O'Hara but the hair is Melanie Hamilton. The orange lipstick looks fabulous on her (and such flawless skin!).

One lipstick I'm not loving is the one Zoe Saldana chose for the same Tree Of Life premiere. It's not just a fluke of a photo as I've searched for other ones. I think it's the lipstick's finish- it's too dry and unflattering. The same color might have looked considerable better in a creamier texture.

  1. I love when you post celebrity photos! I'm too lazy to surf around for them ;-) Gwen and Fan look HOT! Love both those looks.

  2. Fan Bing Bing would do Scarlet O'Hara proud! She looks like a beautiful porcelain doll.

PerilouslyPale got it right about Gwen. She looks hot--and fierce. There are no other words to describe her.

As for Zoe's lip color, I always cringe when I hear that cosmetic brands are toying with mattes again. I know they try to mix things up so we'll feel compelled to buy in order to remain fashionable, but matte lipstick does no one any good. Witness a lovely woman, wearing a lovely color, whose lips look dry, uncomfortable, and totally unkissable.

  4. Gaia- I am in total agreement with you on Ms. Stefani. I think she would look so much better as a honey blonde than as a Dynel blonde.

  5. I think Zoe is one of the most beautiful women in the world! Too bad that lipstick seems to distract from her instead of compliment her. I also like seeing Gwen with out that red pout of her, glad to see her mixing it up!

  6. PP, looking at celeb photos and taking notes is my favorite form of procrastination. I just pretend it's for the blog ;)

  7. Eileen, I'm with you on matte lipsticks. I couldn't wear them in my 20s and definitely can't now. I get the appeal in theory, but it just doesn't work without special lighting and serious photoshopping.

  9. Lawrence, you and I share a certain aesthetics, I think. By the way, a very long, very overdue email is in the works. I'm the worst pen-pal in the universe.

  10. HDtM, I agree. I love Zoe and think her makeup artist should be slapped.

  11. Fan Bing Bing is indeed beautiful, but I am not a fan of the super-heavy lashes and coiled braids she's been wearing at a lot of "International" events (because I doubt the Mainland Chinese audience sees her like this). It definitely sets her apart, but I think the mask-like quality of the makeup and hair obscures her natural beauty, and the contrast between her extremely fair skin and eyes is a little too Tim Burton for my liking. I find that my first thought when I see her is how much nicer she would look with a tan.

  12. Fan Bing Bing looks lovely, and I like the hair, but the eyelashes are too much for me. It looks as though she's struggling to hold them open with all the weight that's been put on them. More natural lashes would have made the look.

  13. i don't think it's simply the finish that is the problem with zoe's lips... that color is too rust/brown on her. it does not flatter her complexion at all.

fan bing bing looks fantastic! american starlets should take notes!

    cheers,
    minette

  14. Diana, Fan Bing Bing with a tan sounds so... wrong. I'd like to see that but it also feels like a heresy.

  15. BBJ, now that you said it (and I see the point), when I look at her photo I can't shake the thought of her struggling to lift her lashes. It's quite disturbing.

  16. Minette, perhaps something a little more rosy would have looked livelier and more fresh on Zoe.

  17. When I saw the Gwen Cannes pic, I thought the same thing. Why can't she go a little darker blonde? It's just so harsh. It's not good "drama" to me.

    Fan Bing Bing looks amazing.

  18. V., yes, I think Gwen would look more sophisticated and elegant without losing her edge if she went just a bit darker. I get the whole blonde thing, but this is just a bit too harsh and bordering on trashy.
