Zoe Saldana at the fifth Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

Rules were made to be broken but dress codes were invented for a reason. One such reason is to prevent awkward photos like the ones showing Zoe Saldana posing with friends at the fifth Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic that took place over the weekend in Jersey City. Zoe Saldana usually shows a wonderfully fresh style, but in this case I find the black leather shorts and exposed midriff far too tacky for a 33 year old star.

My guess is that Zoe didn't want to partake in the traditional sweet summer dress look sported by Minka Kelly, Padma Lakshami, Alek Wek, Jennifer Morrison, and Leslie Bibb. But I far prefer the fun boho way of Racel Zoe to Zoe Saldana's choice of Theyskens’ Theory outfit.

What say you?

  1. It's like one of those moments when Americans are criticized for not knowing how to dress for occasions (even those that happen here in the US!). It doesn't scream edgy as much as out of place and, well...sweat inducing (wearing black and leather out in the sun is unpleasant, at least for me).

I'm not a fan of dresses that drag on the ground when you're out walking on the grass. I think the droop of the hat, plus the long hair and high collar are a bit smothering even in a light fabric.

  2. I liked it...for another event. Maybe at night. But I also don't like Rachel Zoe's look, I prefer a knee length or midi dress like other women were wearing.
Now, I do not agree that Zoe being 33 has any bearing in how she can wear edgy leather shorts and an exposed midriff. She is exposing a bit of belly, that's all, that is not tacky in my opinion.

  3. I think Zoe is a great looking woman, but she looks uncomfortably out of place in her black leather garb. Sometimes a woman deliberately plans a look that is designed to set her apart and grab attention. Sometimes a woman simply makes a mistake and ends up looking like she didn't get the fashion memo. Zoe's choice is definitely a case of the latter.

As for Rachel's quasi-hippie look, oh well. You win some; you lose some. This look is just a bit too floppy and makes her look like she's a little girl playing dress up in her mother's old clothes. I think she could have really made this work had she not succumbed to such exaggeration in proportions. Not a winner, but far better than Zoe's.

  4. Tacky. It shouts "I want to be different". Oh you ARE dear, you ARE!

  5. I don't mind the fact that she didn't want to wear a dress, but she could have worn sometying less...ugly. Actually a floral printed suit would have been pretty cool for the ocasion. Or perhaps a white suit. But that thing looks like she's going clubbing.
