Sheer florals, wet florals, light musky florals, too prim and proper perfumes, fragrance styles that don’t go with my hair... Who is this person and why is she hoarding various Bvlgari Tea perfume samples in the bottom drawer of her nightstand? I can’t even blame spring, because the madness started over a year ago and has been fairly consistent throughout two winters, especially at bedtime or as a scent for the first couple hours of the day (until I’m fully awake, I guess).\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003ELast year around this time I’ve told you how I fell in love with a most unlikely perfume, \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.thenonblonde.com\/2018\/04\/aerin-linen-rose-perfume-review.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003ELinen Rose by Aerin\u003C\/a\u003E. If that wasn’t enough, Sephora and a few department stores were pushing samples of another \u003Cb\u003EAerin\u003C\/b\u003E, the 2015 release \u003Cb\u003EMediterranean Honeysuckle\u003C\/b\u003E, one of their regular EdPs. I’m a sucker for honeysuckle, real and in perfume, so maybe it’s not a surprise that I fell for it. Still, the honeysuckle note here is steeped in citrus juice and heavily bleached by sunshine. It could have easily been a Jo Malone perfume, but who cares? It’s pretty and have lighted up many a dreary morning over winter.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ESpeaking of \u003Cb\u003EJo Malone\u003C\/b\u003E, this one is a sad craving because I missed out on the limited edition \u003Cb\u003EWisteria and Violet\u003C\/b\u003E from their 2014 London Rain collection. I held on to samples and hesitated for too long because it wasn’t what I envisioned as \"my thing\". It sold out rather quickly and that was it. The wisteria in my own garden is about a week away from blooming. We planted it by the deck, right next to the picture window of the living room, so its scent will burst in for a few days. It’s a gorgeous and fleeting moment, just like visiting London, my favorite city, and taking it in, trying to mentally tattoo every sensation and memory onto my heart. A bottle of this Jo Malone would have done me a world of good.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EIn a sharp turn from these modern fresh florals, here’s a retro one with billowing sleeves and a touch of melancholy. I’ve actually loved \u003Cb\u003E\u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.thenonblonde.com\/2008\/05\/nocturnal-me-nocturnes-de-caron.html#.XLjNgOhKhPY\" target=\"_blank\"\u003ENocturnes de Caron\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/b\u003E for many years despite or because it was clearly a perfume for a different woman. I’m not into astrology in any form, but I’m willing to bet no one familiar with Nocturnes would ever assign it to a Scorpio. I still feel a little like a pretender when I’m wearing it, but again, whatever. I might be a pretender but I smell like a proper lady.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EThis is where I’m feeling like a hypocrite because I’m over \u003Cb\u003EBy Kilian\u003C\/b\u003E and the various aspirational shenanigans of this Lauder-owned brand (yes, Aerin and Jo Malone are also part of the monster), yet I’m completely and utterly in lust with their\u003Cb\u003E Moonlight In Heaven.\u003C\/b\u003E Let’s blame it on my severe coconut allergy that makes me compensate for it through coconut perfumes. \u003Ci\u003EMoonlight \u003C\/i\u003Eis a tropical pudding served alongside peeled wedges of sweet citrus fruit, and it all comes in clear glass bowls that reflect the light of the sunset from the beach. Obviously I’m in a need of a real vacation.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cb\u003EFleur de Peau by Diptyque\u003C\/b\u003E is another example of a “somebody else’s perfume”. It’s an iris, I’ll give you that, but of the very soapy and musky variety that I tend to skip (think \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.thenonblonde.com\/2011\/08\/frederic-malle-iris-poudre.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EIris Poudre\u003C\/a\u003E without all the \u003Ci\u003Epoudre\u003C\/i\u003E). It’s not makeupy, not particularly sexy, has none of the shadow and light of the truly great iris perfumes, but it’s pretty and actually warms up on the skin if you manage to make it last. Goes well with a vintage dress, pearls and opal, real hardcover books read by the open window, and beautiful cursive handwriting. I want to have a day like that every once in a while. Maybe I'll even do something with my hair in its honor.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EThis is where you get to wonder whether I’ve been abducted by aliens and replaced with a pod person. Last week I received a PR package from \u003Cb\u003EElizabeth Arden\u003C\/b\u003E. It had the original 2017 \u003Cb\u003EWhite Tea\u003C\/b\u003E and the two new flankers, Vanilla Orchid and Wild Rose. Vanilla Orchid is a quince preserve that was cooked with a bit of vanilla but the pod was removed too early and not scraped into the jelly. Wild Rose scares me enough to wait until I can test it with a couple of friends. But it’s the original one that I suddenly find compelling (Reese Witherspoon is the campaign’s face, but it feels like she’s doing it in character as Madeline from Big Little Lies. That’s a good thing). I’m pretty sure I’m anosmic to at least half the structure of this fragrance because I’m not sure that in a blind test I can tell it apart from the Bvlgari one with the same name. I get a suspiciously cheerful citrusy white musk, slightly hysterical in its over-enthusiasm. Between the disgrace that is Gabrielle, the travesty of L’Eau, and the gut job they did on the Les Exclusifs I’ve completely lost interest in anything they have to offer other than the makeup. Oh my god, the makeup! But the perfumes I’ve loved are ruined and the one I hated are now tolerable which is weird yet not enough of\u0026nbsp; a reason to wear Jersey. Then came \u003Cb\u003E1957, the most recent Les Exclusif \u003C\/b\u003Eeau de parfum and I’m a goner. It’s both very modern using layer upon layer of white musk, perhaps the most synthetic of notes, but the layers are laminated in buttery florals like the dough of a French puff pastry. The sparkling citrus wrapped around young orange blossoms tames the animalic tendencies of this note. Normally I’d object to such treatment but somehow it works here. While the composition is new and even experimental for Chanel there’s still a nostalgic hint of real Chanel DNA when I’m wearing it. The world was quite nasty in 1957 if you weren’t a white man, middle class and above; as was Mademoiselle herself, so we need to be careful with the fake nostalgia. However, the 50s aesthetics can be enjoyed at face value, ironically, or as a guilty pleasure. It doesn't always happen with their spring and summer collections, but these combinations of neutrals and rich greens are among the things they do best, and I'm all about the green lately.\u0026nbsp; First there's the Spring\/Summer quad (not to be confused with Cruise Collection quad which we'll talk about in a few days and also look at alternatives),\u0026nbsp;Première Eclosion 302.\u0026nbsp; It's a limited edition item (Chanel.com has sold out weeks ago but most department stores have it in stock right now). The colors are semi sheer and can only be built u to a certain point. It's not Instagram makeup and isn't meant to be. I'm fine with that, since it works beautifully for a daytime real people look. The texture is pliable and blendable, and all the colors in the quad can be layered over a cream eye shadow base, either from Chane (see below) or from other brands, upscale or drugstore.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThe colors in Première Eclosion are a pale mint green (applies best with a dense flat brush over a creamy base, needs little to no blending, a peach with a light sheen and more robust pigmentation, a light taupe with a silky sheen, and an almost matte dark chocolate brown. The texture of all four is smoother than I remember from other baked quads, and they can all be applied with fingers in a hurry. I've done the 30 seconds per eye with two colors in several combinations and they look just as sophisticated as a more elaborate placement, though the latter is of course more fun to create.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EBottom Line: mostly for Chanel fans, but not a bad place to start a habit. The compact (about the size of a Chanel regular blush) is wide enough so you can go in with your brush and pick the blush and highlighter separately, or just swirl them together. Both methods give a very pretty radiant look. The blush shows up on my cheeks much better than it swatches, which happens to me with many Chanel makeup items. That's their beauty, really, the complexity of the pigment translates very well to the face; the very fine texture delivers a veil of color that never cakes or look patchy, yet can be built to some degree. I have no issue with pigment intensity in\u0026nbsp;Premieres Fleurs Harmony Of Powders, but I suspect anyone darker than an NC 37-40 would find it just a glorified peachy finishing powder, and that's a shame.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThere's a bit of a silver overspray in the Asian-inspired embossing. It goes away after the first brush swipe. I understand why they did it, but overspray annoys the everloving bejeesus out of me on principle. Don't put makeup on my makeup. That's my job.Other than that it's a classic Chanel face color, in the usual packaging with the familiar velveteen pouch and a brush that works in a pinch (I used it for the swatches and it didn't slash or irritate my skin). I like using relatively small domed or tapered blush brushes with a good snap and density, but just about anything that fits the compact and my face works very well. All the old colors have been gone for ages (how many Giggle or Unity Glossimer have you repurchased?), and the formula has been tweaked for the better more than once. The current version is actually called Rouge Coco Gloss Moisturizing Glossimer, but the packaging is the same as ever. It's a lip gloss with a typical fuzzy doe foot applicator and a very hydrating and comfortable formula. It's old school in the very best way,\u0026nbsp; not goopy, doesn't smear everywhere, and has just enough pigment to be worn by itself on a casual lip day. The color I chose this time, Bourgeoisie 119, came out with the other summer items and matches the color story (I'll show you the quad, Premiere Eclosion, in an upcoming post) but it's part of the permanent collection. It was an online exclusive when I first saw and bought the Chanel Les 9 Ombres Multi-Effects Eyeshadow Palette from the spring\/summer 2018 collection (since then it's been distributed to all the usual suspects- Bloomingdale's, Saks, Nordstrom, etc.\u0026nbsp; and is available at the counters), so I had to get over my bias against Chanel's larger palettes that for the most part are inferior to their quads, in my opinion. The colors, however, sang an irresistible siren song, and the many combination they offered made me want to get creative and dip my brushes into them asap. I won the gamble big time.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThere are nine eye shadows in the Les 9 Ombres Multi-Effects palette (duh. Thank you, Captain Obvious), arranged in trios that suggest three distinct looks: neutral warm (left), neutral cool (right), and a tropical vacation (middle). They can also be used in any combination, as a single wash of color, and everything in between. The finishes go from matte to satin, the formula is the classic pressed one (unlike the season's eye \u003Ci\u003Equad\u003C\/i\u003E, Premier Eclosion, which I'll show you soon and is the baked formula. Chanel powder eye shadows are often on the sheer side, designed to allow for building up the color if desired. This isn't the case here. The swatches above (done with my trusty old Paula Dorf paddle shaped Eye Glimmer brush) show 1-2 brush strokes, unblended. The texture is very very soft, though, and you can over-blend easily, so my suggestion is to use flat brushes of various widths to pat down the colors and only blend the edges. You don't need more than that. Wear time (over various eye primers) exceeds 8-10 hours and has withheld through a short walk in the rain. The colors remain vibrant, especially the bright blue and green.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EHere's what you get in this palette other than the two silly little sponge applicators:\u0026nbsp;\u003Cbr \/\u003Ematte peach (opaque and creamy)\u003Cbr \/\u003Ematte warm tobacco\/medium brown (very opaque, blends perfectly)\u003Cbr \/\u003Ematte espresso brown with a hint of gray khaki (dryer texture,\u0026nbsp; requires a small dense precision brush)\u003Cbr \/\u003Esatin peacock teal that can lean a bit green, depending on the primer underneath (opaque and rich in texture, requires a heavy-duty eye cleanser for complete removal)\u003Cbr \/\u003Esatin medium green with a hint of gold (almost opaque, very soft)\u003Cbr \/\u003Eshimmer yellow gold (opaque, a bit crumbly)\u003Cbr \/\u003Esatin glimmery warm beige (semi-sheer, barely shows on my arm but makes a perfect luminous lid color and layers beautifully)\u003Cbr \/\u003Esatin warm cocoa brown (opaque, creamy with a glimmer finish)\u003Cbr \/\u003Esatin complex cool toned gray\/green\/brown (dryish but buildable from the one gray swipe you see above to a very dark brown)\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EMy personal preference is to use the eyeshadows in pairs, but I've also done three and four at a time. The most fun ones were the peach+green and the teal+gold. Layering the Chanel shadows over cream bases can give them extra vibrancy and a twelve hour hold. But the greatness of the palette is in the way you can use it for the most chic tonal Parisian looks just as quickly and easily as a hot party look, a one color intense smoky eye, a bright beachy summer eye or a an autumnal rust and gold one. It's an exquisite palette that encourages creativity in a way we usually get from indie brands, without compromising on the delicate touch and finish Chanel fans expect. I went with as many Chanel products as looked reasonable, and also gave their Les Beiges Healthy Glow foundation another chance, this time loading up on skin enriching\u0026nbsp;The Face Shop Mango Seed Butter Glow Date-Prep, to make sure my skin texture is at its very best. Les Beiges still sucked the life out of it for the first hour of wear, before settling into a powdery matte finish. I can't see myself wearing it unless I'm going to be outside in a super humid weather. And even then I'm not sure that's the best option. My shade match, after also testing the yellower No. 21 and the darker No.40, turned to be No.30, which was not a big surprise. Out of the bottle and unblended the color looked Trumpily orange (see below), but apparently my arm has a lot more green than my face these days, so it was the better option color-wise. I used all four colors, starting with the lightest brown from the lash line up to just above the crease, then added the second-lightest on the outer two thirds of the mobile lid. Nest step was mixing the red and darkest brown into the outer V, creating a shape that I topped with a lot more of the red. I've already experimented enough with it that my lids can take an abnormal amount of this color because they're that much darker than any other part of my skin. Some of the Stylo pencils have a horrible texture or a miserable pigment, but Santal is excellent (and thankfully permanent).
