Tom Ford Beauty: Coming soon

I can't help it. Tom Ford can annoy me to no end with his penchant for vulgarity, borderline megalomania and general smugness, but the guy is also incredibly talented. His longtime cooperation with Estee Lauder is now  embarking on a new phase; a full line of prestige cosmetics under Ford's name, propelled by the success of his (fabulous) Private Blend lipstick collection.

In an interview for WWD, Tom Ford tells about his teenage years experimenting with cosmetics and homemade remedies (he had a horrible allergic reaction from using cucumber slices on his eyes) and his ideas about beauty:

“You need to understand the face and compensate for the architecture of the face,” he said. He points to eyebrows, which fade and thin out as a woman ages. “A nice thick brow is the key to a youthful look,” he said, adding that a darker, heavier brow can make a high forehead appear less high, while an arched and tailored brow can make a round face appear more regular.
The focus is color and lots of it, from what it sounds and looks we're talking some serious disco glam, but the photos of the products themselves suggest that those of us who don't go for the Studio 54 look can still find a lot to love. Also, it seems like there are new perfumes on the way. Santal Blush sounds incredibly appealing. The article and interview didn't specify exactly when we can expect to see the products at the counters here in the US, but hopefully soon (other sources have mentioned September). That brown nail polish and the eye shadow palette are calling my name.

Now, just for fun, here's a photo of a very young Tom Ford I found somewhere on the web:

Are you excited about the new line or holding a grudge? And what would Estee say?

Top photos and all information from WWD the online edition.

  1. I'm glad he is expanding his collection. The lipsticks are great and hopefully the other products will be up to those standards. I keep seeing this announcement on a few different blogs, it has me concerned that I won't be able to wait until September!

  2. SANTAL BLUSH? Wow, that is really calling MY name. I can't think of two more appealing words to string together.

  3. I am pleased to see them expanding the line. The lipsticks are lovely, I certainly cherish the one I own. I think my bank manager might weep at this news. Maybe it's time for me to go out and find work before September? ;)

  4. Seriously, Tom Ford has not changed a day by those pictures. He looks better than the model. Weird, I'm not excited by the product pictures--or maybe not so weird. Usually promo pics look a bit dead to me compared to the product in real life

  5. I am looking forward to his line and reading your reviews about it. I have NONE (gasp), but that will change soon, no doubt.

As an aside, should I be worried that the captcha word is "gassed"?

  6. Tom Ford is so beautiful himself...but, well, what is up with the model's teeth? Is it my monitor or the angle of the picture or something else?

  7. I'm dying to find out more about the two new fragrances. The names are certainly evocative of what you'll get, and yet with names like Santal Blush and Jasmine Rouge it leaves you plenty of room to wonder.

As an aside that black and white picture isn't an old picture at all, it's from the December 2010 US Vogue.

  8. I am very excited, to be completely honest. I have his private blend lipstick and I totally love it. If the price range would be matched to By Terry or CdP, well, it would be such a bad thing if the quality could justify the price! :) The photos look both lush and delish! xxx

  9. Those green eye shadows look divine!

  10. I love some of his scents (Moss Breches, Purple Patchouli, Noir de Noir) and would love to see the quality of the makeup line.
I do think the colors are quite disco from the 70's, now where is my Jantzen dance wear? ;)

  11. It sounds exciting, judging by the lipsticks.
That bottom pic is of course a "parody" of the infamous H.Newton pics of the YSL tux: Funny, who would have known back then, that Tom Ford would indeed work at YSL one day? (and with much controversy within the house?)

  12. Tragic, isn't it, that all I can think of when I see that ad is 'gosh he's got nice hands!'
I do love a man with good thumbs. I know, I know. Y'all can call me freaky.

  13. Diane, I'm also happy to see a full collection. I've been waiting for it ever since the gorgeous nail polish from the holiday collection.

  14. Carrie, I know. I hear "Santal" and I'm so there.

  15. Jane, I'm with you. My credit cards are already shaking with fear.

  16. Amy, I thought the photos that were just released are better than average. That brown nail polish...

  17. ZP, I wish there was a way to customize the captcha. I'd have so much fun with it.

I promise to get every interesting item from this collection and I have a feeling that sooner or later you'll join me.

  18. Vicunasuz, from several photos I've seen of this model I think she has a small gap between her teeth. I kind of appreciate it because I have one, too.

  19. Spike, thanks for the info. I thought it looked familiar but figured it was because it was an older photo and just accepted the label I saw on the tumblr account. Serves me right for not searching a little more.

  20. Poseylass, I definitely count on this line to be a serious new player in the high-end game. Things have been too quiet there for a while.

  21. Charlestongirl, I know! There's also a purple/fuchsia quad that's utterly not my thing. I'm also hoping for blue.

  22. Elizabeth, I love the same perfumes and thrilled I got bottles before they were discontinued. Judging by the existing lipsticks, the line is going to be top notch.

  23. Elena, I'm simply happy to see more of what Tom Ford can do with his own line. It suits him much better than interpreting another designer's vision.

  24. Old Raven, me too. I considered getting a third from the Private Blend line but now going to wait for this new collection.

  25. Wordbird, I like his hands as well. They're elegant yet strong and manly, not the pale pianist type. Maybe that's why I ended up marrying a farm boy.
