Makeup For Ever Rouge Artist Natural N11 & N27 Lipsticks

Makeup For Ever Rouge Artist Natural range  is the brand's response to the popular trend of sheer lipsticks. Their Rouge Artist Intense lipsticks are exactly what the name promises: pigment-saturated and opaque, so I was looking forward to see what a lighter version can do. I chose N11 (Iridescent Strawberry) and N27 (Iridescent Blue Pink), both with a pearl finish. The colors look very promising in the tube, and the sheen seems smooth without individual particles. Makeup For Ever also promised some serious hydration: up to eight hours after application.

The good news is that Makeup For Ever Rouge Artist Natural is very smooth and almost balmy. The bad news is that there's nothing else to recommend it. The colors are extremely sheer: the swatches you see above are actually 3 coats of color, otherwise there wasn't much to talk about. Since my lips are quite dark, there's barely a way to tell the colors apart when I'm wearing them, and they don't add anything but sheen to my makeup look. Longevity is also an issue. I have sheer lipsticks from other major brands and most at least leave a nice stain. Makeup For Ever Rouge Artist Natural, at least the two lipsticks I've tried, stays far behind. As a matter of fact, the lipsticks reminded me some drugstore products of yore. Definitely not an item that can give a good fight to Laura Mercier, Chanel, Dior or Burberry. Perhaps I should have tried the darkest shades in a satin finish (N45 and N50), but right now I can't see the point.

Bottom Line: Disappointing.

Makeup For Ever Rouge Artist Natural lipsticks ($19 each) are exclusive to Sephora, online and in store.

  1. I have N28 (purple), which must have more pigmentation, since I have fairly dark lips too, and it shows up on me. I wasn't really impressed with any of the other colours though.

  2. Thanks for this review! I was pretty hooked by the promises, but clearly these lipsticks aren't all they're cracked up to be. I'll stick with my Revlon Lip Butters and save the pennies, thanks very much!
