Karl Lagerfeld for Shu Uemura Holiday 2012 Collection

There was a lot of excitement when news first broke about the Karl Lagerfed for Shu Uemura makeup collection for holiday 2012. Everyone has been waiting to see what it's going to look like and plotting ways to get every.single.item. And a backup. Now that the first images were released I'm not exactly sure what to think. Apparently, Uncle Karl took his inspiration from Japanese manga and designed his own character, Mon Shu, a doll with red eyes sporting a black bob. Mon Shu is as cute as it gets, but she's a doll. A very very girly doll.

And she reminds me of Dora the Explorer:
Mon Shu--

Dora--

Some of the items in this Karl Lagerfeld for Shu Uemura Holiday 2012 Collection are classic Shu products repackaged (cleansing oil, lash curler, and the popular UV Base). I admit that the makeup train case caught my eye, probably because I'm on the market for a new one and Mon Shu is cuter than anything else I saw in Sephora or elsewhere.

As for makeup, Lagerfeld created two eye-and-cheek palettes containing six shades each. The palettes are based on smoky green and on smoky purple and at least one of them is supposed to feature a red eye shadow. There's also a dark purple gel eyeliner, four lip shades (Mon Shu Red, Luxe Burgundy, Celebrity Beige and Parisienne Pink). Nail colors come in Karl Black, Shu Shu Red and Royal Beige, and each is sold with a strip of nail stickers featuring Mon Shu. Shu Uemura's specialty, false lashes is represented with two styles. One is made of red-and-black fabric and makes absolutely no sense to cranky middle-aged me:

The collection will make its appearance on the US website and in Canada and the UK in October, later rolling out in the rest of the world. According to WWD the prices are going to be:

Eye-and-cheek palette 69 euros, or $84.65 at current exchange
Lipstick for 29.50 euros, or $36.20
Eyeliner is to be 27 euros, or $33.10
Nail polish- 22 euros, or $27
Premium eyelashes, 56 euros, or $68.70, and the mini eyelashes, 28 euros, or $34.30.
The eyelash curler will retail for 35 euros, or $42.90; the mini brush set, 49 euros, or $60.10, and the makeup box, 300 euros, or $367.80 (!!!). The 450-ml. makeup remover is to be 86 euros, or $105.45, and the base mousse, 46 euros, or $56.40.

What do you think? Are you still excited about this collection? What are you planning to get?

  1. Perhaps I'm too fussy but this collection looks awful. Tokidoki-esque. Maybe I am old. lol

  2. I'm super excited about this collection. I definitely want to get my hands on the lash curlers and mini brush set as I know Shu's brush sets are always of high quality.

  3. Yup, Dora as a teen -- hair dyed black (and now using products to tamp down the sticky-up bits), red contact lenses, heavy black eyeliner, red lipstick and the solemn, too cool to smile or speak pose.

  4. Bah. The illustration looks nice but the actual graphic looks like an evil vampire Dora. Miss for me.

  6. I don't know about this. It reminds me of the too cutesy world of Hello Kitty and Tokidoki cosmetics. I know there are some people who find mature women masquerading as child-like dolls or prepubescent tweenies to be sexy, but I'm definitely not one of them. As for the packaging, it's like Shu and Chanel decided to resurrect Little Miss toiletries. It just doesn't appeal to me.

  7. The freaky version of Dora completely turns me off. Yikes!

  8. Dora the Explorer -- CANNOT UNSEE.

Your nefarious wit aside, this looks like an easy pass for me. Never had a mixed creams'n'powders Shu palette not disappoint me.
(Also, not particularly a Karl fangirl in any case, I was more excited for the rumoured input from old Mr. Uemura but these look very much like conventional new Shu.)

  9. I don't care what fashion designer puts his name on it - red or pink eye shadow doesn't look good on ANYBODY!!!!!! It just reminds me of pinkeye.

  11. Perhaps Uncle Karl needs to replenish his store of one or two virtues of humanity ... I gotta draw the line at this one! C'mon, guys, Hello Kitty- the resemblance to Dora is blatant. Does Lagerfeld imagine that it won't be noticed? Because it's Him, after all? Dear me. I am not in the least interested by this. Thanks for the post, Gaia. How pompous he is. xoxo Beth in Pgh ;-)

  12. I never understood "cartoon-" based cosmetic collections for grown women.

  14. K.L is either regressing into a childhood he never had, or is getting a bit too big for his britches. Equally, I am frankly appalled/disgusted/flabbergasted that Shu Uemera for one millisecond even contemplated this 'collection' of muck as being deemed worthy of their brand? All of my expectations (which were on hold because I had a feeling this was going to be too good to be true) ... are right where they began. At the bottom. xo Care

  15. As someone who reads manga (yes, I know but I need a break too), I don't get this collection at all. It's too trendy-ish & French-ified and seems to show a shallow, if not non-existent, understanding of manga and its aesthetics. Sorry but Mr. Lagerfeld needs to do more research ...

And Ms. Gaia, you're right - Dora the Explorer indeed! XD

  16. Shu Uemura has had many palettes and collaboration collections previously with the cutesy design. The brand is definitely more popular in the asian market where the cartoon and cute things are sort after so i'm not sure why people are so surprised over the design. I think it looks fine and fits nicely with my collection of other cutesy shu uemura palettes. Collections are meant to be a little different. Or they'll just be like the usual line of products available.
