Those Were The Days- Fashion, Models, Makeup Part I

Last weekend I spent more time than I'm willing to admit browsing the archives of Top Models Of The World. The site has photos from fashion shows, scans of fashion and beauty editorials from old magazines and vintage ads featuring famous and less famous models. Usually I look for older stuff, but I was sucked in by items from the 1908s and 90s, pictures I've seen on the pages of the actual magazines during the times they were the only connection lifeline to the fashion world. I picked some of these gems to share with you.

Ines de la Fressange in Chanel was elegance personified:

Even in this kind of an outfit:

The same goes for Iman in Dior:

Even Guerlain and Famke Janssen didn't escape the 80s:

Madame Sarkozy:

Nobody escaped the mullet:

Janice Dickinson in saner days; Cosmo in less smutty days:

Aziza taught us how do apply blush:

Pretty much my fashion ideal circa 1982:

Serge Lutens took his creative vision from Dior to Shiseido:

The gentleman in the next two photos is Uncle Karl:

Jerry Hall and Joan Severance in French Vogue:

Kimora, before Baby Phat and reality TV:

Cindy was already regretting the pleated pants:

No idea what's going on there, but bunny!!!

Stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow!

  1. Omgosh, these brought back so many memories. I met Uncle Karl back in the early 90s - he was just as nutty as he is today! LOL!

And Laurel! I'd forgotten that line! I loved their clothes back in the day! They took the shoulder pads down (or out altogether) but otherwise it doesn't look as if they've changed all that much!

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane!

  2. Great post! I love the brows of the model on the vogue Paris cover: typical for that period! And the blush technique, waouh!

  3. :) WAH! I love these photos so much! (and I love the 80's truly) Everything was so big and colorful and tacky. I am really miss my one finger-less lace glove and big permed hair now.

  5. I really miss the over the top - makeup, hair, clothes, perfume - of the 80s. Everything just seems so orderly and clean and perfect now.

    1. I agree. Fashion is hella boring right. If I see another tailored skinny jeans and tee shirt outfit on another skinny celebrity with perfect highlights I think might up-chuck.

  6. What a treat, Gaia - thank you! I often miss the 80s and 90s. It just seems like the ads, the models, the magazines, the perfume - everything - had more personality. ~~nozknoz

  7. This was a walk down memory lane, I remember many of these ads when they were in magazines from the 80s/90s. I'm glad you included pics of Karl, I don't think I've ever seen his eyes, come to think of it!
I love the Pre-Shiseido Serge Lutens ad for Dior, he certainly has a signature style which has always appealed to me.

  8. I didn't even recognize Famke, and I don't remember Carla ever being blonde! Thanks for the fun pictures Gaia!

  9. I think this is the first time I see uncle Karl's eyes!!! Lol

Oh, and Kimora looks nicer from what she is in her reality show :p

I love to see 80-90's ads, since it brings many childhood memories when I wanted to use makeup, but my mom didn't allow me ;)

  10. I am afraid to go on that site for fear that I won't do anything else here at work! There was nothing more than I loved in the world but to look at all my aunt's Vogue issues when I was 10 or 11 and it was '86-'87. I wanted to be Paulina Poriskova and then I discovered my all-time favorite supermodel, Christy Turlingon. I also love the ads back then. I wanted to be those models with their glamourous gowns and makeup. Well fastforward over 20yrs - I may not own the gowns and fur but at least I can apply my makeup well and I'm not afraid of colored eye shadows!
