NARS Brow Perfector & Brow Gel

First, an apology about the photo quality. My laptop has self destructed last night, so while the husband has managed to MacGyver something, I'm working on a less than ideal machine and have used my iPad to take the photos in this post (I doubt I'll repeat this particular experience). Please bear with me until things go back to normal here.

NARS has just released two brow products: a brow pencil and a brow gel. They come in four colors from black to blond (NARS Perfector) and from clear to dark brown for the gel. I received the brown ones: Brow Gel in Piraeus (medium brown) and Brow Perfcetor in Caucase (brown). I usually prefer a brow wax like the one in the Younblood Brow Artiste) and not a gel, because it allows for more control. But NARS Brow Gel is perfectly functional as long as you remember to wipe about 90% of the product the brush picks on the edge of the tube, and even then you need to tissue off some of the excess before applying. Otherwise you get way too much color on your brows and it's going to feel crunchy and stiff when dry. Seriously, practice and experiment before you leave the house with this stuff in your brows.

NARS Brow Perfector pencil has much less of a learning curve. It's actually one of the best in class as far as I'm concerned, as the pencil appears and feels hard (I couldn't even swatch on the back of my hand, but applies like a charm on the eyebrows and takes less effort or tugging the classic Shu Uemura pencil).

Color-wise, four shades are a decent range, but I would have liked to see a fifth one, especially for the gel. My eyebrows (and lashes) are a very dark brown, and I always need a cool toned color that borders on gray to get a natural look. Caucase and Piraeus are almost there but not perfect; I suspect that the clear gel, Oural, would have been a better option in this case.

NARS Brow Perfector & Brow Gel ($22 each) are available at the counters and from narscosmetics.com. The products for this review were sent free of charge by NARS.

  1. I know what you mean when you say Nars could have done with a fifth shade for truly dark brows. My brows and lashes are black. Taupe looks unnatural and most deep brown shades are too warm. The only eyebrow pencils I've found that work well for my coloring now that the hair around my face is predominantly silver are made by Shu Uemura and Clé de Peau (my favorite).

    1. I'll have to try the CdP one eventually. It's been a while since I bought anything from them, but right now I'm waiting for the new fall lipsticks.

  2. This looks promising, but how is it compared to the MAC Brow Gel, do you know? :)

  3. Would like to see more colors too. Maybe something for redheads? We do exist, contrary to the general belief of the makeup companies.
