Lancome Définicils Waterproof Mascara

I usually switch to a waterproof mascara for summer. Between the humidity and the buckets of rain that can pour for days (or catch me unprepared on the street), this is a safe way to avoid smears and smudges. The little Lancome package had a perfect timing: right before we left for a long weekend at the Brimfield Antique Market, which meant long days out, one full day of rain, and rising temperatures.

Définicils is a classic mascara, both in its regular formula as well as the waterproof version. It might not be my favorite of the current roster of Lancome mascaras (that would be Hypnose Drama), but it's a reliable workhorse that I've been using on and off since the late 80s. The thing about Définicils Waterproof is that it's a perfect casual summer mascara. It enhances and darkens the lashes without adding an artificial look. No super length, no extra thickening, so you can wear it to the beach or a backyard BBQ when you want to make some effort but not necessarily appear all made up. Since the mascara is really waterproof and sets right away, you will not get the telltale raccoon eye even when everything else around you melts in the heat.

Like all waterproof mascaras, a dual phase cleanser that contains oil is the best way to remove it with minimal rubbing. Letting the lashes soak under a cotton pad for 15 seconds helps immensely and makes cleansing a breeze without having to deal with flakes that get all over the place.

Bottom Line: a staple, as long as expectations are clear and simple.

Lancome Définicils Waterproof Mascara ($27.50) is available at the counters, Sephora, Ulta, and lancome.com. The product for this review was a press sample.
