Autumn Colors by Alexei Butiriskiy

Book
I'm in the middle of another Laura Ingalls Wilder biography, but have also started a couple of other books, including Mandy Aftel's Fragrant, and The Viceroy's Daughters (about the Curzon sisters, upon recommendation of the wonderful Kafkaesque), and I need to read Cary Elwes' Princess Bride memoir (As You Wish) before the Husband tells me every last anecdote.

Music
Kate Bush- Breathing.
1980, Kate in a bubble/womb, singing of death, rebirth, her mother, and the end of the world. And look at her makeup.

TV
I'm actually enjoying Once Upon a Time again. I thought they jumped the shark a couple of seasons ago (but kept watching anyway, mostly for Robert Carlyle's performance), but suddenly the show managed to find its voice an an emotional hook (no pun intended. Honestly. But it does work).

Perfume
I'm more than a little obsessed with Alexis Karl's work. I had a chance to test her next project, named Poetry of Longing, and I can't wait to get a bottle. It's a super limited release, centered around chocolate, but completely different than her stunning Body Made Luminous.

Makeup
So many palettes, so little time. But mostly, I'm really into blush these days. I separated my blushes into two drawers, one for creams and one for powders, so things are much more streamlined and accessible. As a result, I'be been playing with some of my older Chanel and Lancome blushes and loving them dearly.

Food
Mango. And more mango. Also mac& cheese made with a lot of Gorgonzola dolce.

Frequently Worn Outfit/Item
I'm living in head-to-toe cashmere until the new furnace is installed.

Guilty Pleasure
Long chat with dear friends. No guilt at all, even when we get snarky.

Bane
Totally baneless, and I thank the wonderful Eileen for the frequent reminders. And bonus:

Joy
Pippa (cat, not Middleton) has becomes increasingly cuddly and loving. She used to be the more aloof out of the triplets, but now she's finally into this snuggling thing. And she seems to favor me, which is nice considering you need a crowbar to pry Marigold and Gemma from the husband.

Anticipation
Ordering a second pair of glasses. Fuchsia, this time (my other one is brown+Tiffany blue). Obviously, I'm easily amused (and also becoming a bat).

Wishlist
A pair of statement shoes for fall/winter. Still searching.

Random Thought
I think I might take up needlework again.

How are you doing? Please share your loves, banes, recommendations, and thoughts.

  1. Just when you thought Lady Gaga came up with something different, you realize Kate Bush (and others) did it decades ago. I'm hiding in blankets...and socks...and robes. I am not handling the weather change very well although it does give an opportunity to break out some clothes that have been sitting around.

  2. Bane: Alas, more than a few at the moment. My beloved Toshiba Satellite laptop is in a sad state. It has a virus, and my software geni-oops--that's not PC....is busy with her own life and her mother's. Also, the brawling couple upstairs have a child now. Child, please. ad infinitum, ad nauseum. This borrowed machine does not have a lot of spare memory, and refuses, utterly refuses to go on Facebook. Could it be because this is an XP? (Xtra Pain--in the tuchis!)

Joy: Friends. Cats. Blender drinks without alcohol. (I am in deep denial about the weather out there today. Deep)

Reading: Cooks Illustrated, Cook's Country, and a biography of Maeve Binchy, one of my favorite novelists EVER. Have a library reserve for "The Perfume Collector."

Food: Yes, please! Too many carbs, Toast, with gobs of REAL butter, not some cheap and nasty imitation.

Music: Slaid Cleves. Magical singer-songwriter who grew up in New England, but now is found around Austin. His CD "Unsung," is comprised of songs that songwriting friends have written, but not released. Gorgeous. Some of his music is at YouTube.

Kate Bush.....I have adored this woman, and this woman's work since the early 80s. I would LOVE to know what fragrance(s) she wears. Are there any which have night scented stock in their composition? My favorite of her CDs is currently Hounds of Love/The Ninth Wave.

I have a committee meeting at my faith community this evening (October 21,) and I purely don't wanna. However, I AM the chairman....it's too late to cancel it, and we have too much upcoming to ignore..... Guerlain Vol de Nuit to the rescue. (I am out of Vent Vert, my usual "don't mess with me" scent.

Someone I love, whom I didn't even know about some time ago: Germaine Cellier. I hope she's resting easily.

  3. Just wanted to say that I got Requiem for the Immortal and it lives up to every expectation and hope I had for it. Stunning. Very happy to hear about the Poetry of Longing - looking forward to its release!
Am still waiting on Mandy's new book to arrive. I'm half expecting to have it delivered by a man on a donkey - impossibly slow! Currently losing myself in the 7th century with Nicola Griffith's Hild.
In my long list of professions for my next incarnations, one is to be a fabric artist of some sort or another. I adore modern and antique embroidered fabrics and love modern Scandinavian color blocked knitted sweaters and throws. Have bags and bags full of gorgeously colored silk embroidery threads (can't resist the colors) and beautiful yarns for when I actually master the art of knitting (predicting this won't happen till one of those future incs.), but I never seem to finish needlework projects. Too impatient. Prefer painting or drawing for that reason.

  4. Awww, Kate Bush. I drove my siblings CRAZY with loud and frequent playing of her cassettes tapes. Cassettes! Her songs jolt me to those wonderful crazy hair days. Mine was actually like hers in this video at one time, only shorter.

  5. Book
I'm not currently reading anything right now, but I did finally get my long-awaited Amazon order a few days ago that includes Mandy's new book. I'm trying to hold out and wait for my Zurich trip to read everything I ordered, but I have a feeling that at least one of the three books will be picked up this weekend and started =)

    Music
Taylor McFerrin - yes, Bobby McFerrin's son, ha!, but his music is sooo far from "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and I'm loving it at the moment. Also, I can't get enough of the sound of trumpets these days... =)

    TV
    Um, does YouTube count?

    Perfume
Epic Man, Epic Man, Epic Man. And Roja's spangly and spectacular Risque pour Femme.

    Makeup
You, my dearest big sis, have been a terrible influence on me these days! So much makeup, so little time. I can't wait to dig into my Dior Cuir Cannage, or the RBR palette, or the Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks I picked up a couple of hours ago!

    Food
I don't have much of an appetite these days, except for hummus, strangely enough.

    Frequently Worn Outfit/Item
Skinny jeans and my best friend's weird sweater-jacket thing that fits me perfectly, so he's not getting it back.

    Guilty Pleasure
Jam sessions with my musician friends and that weird part of YouTube where you can find old training videos from Wendy's, KFC, etc.

    Bane
    I can't get into it here. =/

    Joy
I'm trying to take better emotional care of myself. Trying. I've been having some lovely days lately.

    Anticipation
This weekend, since I'm off and hope to spend lots of time doing happy, fun things for myself.

    Wishlist
I would love a new, large cast-iron pan. I am hoping for one for Hanukkah/Christmas. I miss cooking.

    Random Thought
I need to shower, since I have to go meet Brian at 7!

  6. Hi Gaia. I actually live next door to Lee Arenberg, the actor who plays Grumpy on OUAT, and I told him that one of my favorite bloggers posted that she was re-charmed by the show. I described your blog and thought you might be interested to know that Lee is an Amouage man. Actually, he has a very extensive scent library and always brings his wife a new scent when he returns from his travels. His latest acquisition for her was Narcotic Venus. In any event, he was happy to hear about your OUAT mood swing.
