Magnifying Mirror Musings

I've always had a love-hate relationship with those magnifying mirrors in hotel bathrooms. Do I really want to get that closely acquainted with my pores and under-eye area just when I'm off the plane? Not to mention the lighting in those bathrooms was not designed to flatter, and who knows what I'll see when looking that closely.

On the other hand, they do make some tasks remarkably easier, not to mention precise, and I'm weird enough to enjoy looking at mascara wands up close and see exactly what they do for my lashes.

My solution has always been trying to focus on the less scary areas of the face and ignore the rest. Or just skip that evil mirror altogether...

On my most recent trip I got brave and really looked. It was somewhat of an ego boost to realize that even up close I have a better skin than certain (younger than me) celebrities. I also found out that such a mirror is very helpful in assessing your success in makeup removal. I liked it so much that now I'm considering getting a magnifying mirror for my bathroom at home.

Do you have one? How do you feel about these mirrors and what you see in them?

  1. i have one and i love it. it's definitely not for skin-obsessed as it will only feed unhealthy habits, but for tweezing and additional lighting while i'm applying my makeup, it's great.

  2. i currently have one in my bathroom on the opposite wall as my normal mirror (i just turn around depending on what i'm doing.) i love it for what you mentioned, mascara and makeup removal. i do anything skin related in the regular mirror because it's too easy to go overboard, thinking you need more concealer or eyeshadow or whatever than you do. sometimes it's nice to look back in the regular mirror and realize you look better than the magnified one would have you believe :)

  3. as my eyesight deteriorates , I find it a necessity . But set a timer or something so you don't look too long or too carefully , you know what I mean ?

  4. I've never used one, and I don't know if I should! What celebrities did you get to see?

  5. I always apply makeup using one. My eyesight has never been good enough to use a normal mirror, unless I get so close to it that my breath mists it up and then, again, I can't see!
    Besides, I'm a perfectionist... ;-)

  6. It is a "must have" gadget for every woman/girl..the one I own(Babyliss) has even 4 lights options...and I always use only the normal mirror, the other which enlarges is covered with dust.-)

  7. I used to have one but I was obsessed with my pores and would constantly pick at them. They're good for tweezing but I don't have much else use for them, so I didn't bother to replace mine when it broke.

  8. This is so funny! I was just thinking about how much I appreciate my vanity mirror. I have one that has a light so you REALLY see EVERYTHING. It's great when I need to tweeze my eyebrows and meticulously put on liquid liner. I don't know how I put on makeup before I got one.

  9. I would like to have one, even though I can look pretty scary sometimes, but it helps to remember that no one else will see me that way, and besides, I am not going to be filmed in HD like those poor celebs!

  10. Since my eyesight has gotten worse with age, I use a Magic Focus magnifying mirror to do my eye makeup. It's a necessity these days. And I limit my time staring into it for too long, lest I decide to never face another human in this lifetime. {*_*}
