Eau de Madeleine by Au Pays de la Fleur d'Oranger

These are not Proust's madeliene's.  Eau de Madeleine by Au Pays de la Fleur d'Oranger dries down sweeter, smoother, and more comforting that the first part of the fragrance suggests, but it's not a gourmand. For the most part, Eau de Madeleine is an incense scent. Its uniqueness to me is in the way the incense is carefully intertwined with flowers. Delicate blooms climb up the smoke column rising from the incense, opening it up, embracing the wearer, drawing you deeper and deeper into its mysteries.

Incense perfumes are usually meditative and promote a reflective solitude. Eau de Madeleine isn't that austere, though the opening has an ethereal dreamy quality that wraps me up and relaxes me from the very first spritz. There's darkness in this Au Pays de la Fleur d'Oranger that I have yet to encounter in most of their perfumes (another exception is their brilliant Neroli Oud which also goes there), and it's the dim light of a well-shaded room decorated to create a respite and a retreat, creating an inner peace.

The combination of incense, delicate rose and other blooms over a musky vanillic base, is hearty enough to support the unique character of Eau de Madeleine. Projection and sillage are equally robust, and longevity is an all-day affair. This is a beautiful perfume that has worked for me in a warmer weather and is just as alluring and effective between the sweaters and scarves of the season. I wish Au Pays de la Fleur d'Oranger would get the attention it deserves as a classic French brand that creates thoroughly modern perfumes.

Eau de Madeleine by Au Pays de la Fleur d'Oranger ($140, 100ml eau de parfum) is available from Indigo Perfumery. They seem to be the only one to stock it, and they also sell samples, so no blind buys necessary.

  1. What a perfect photo for this scent. Also love the verbal imagery you used to describe it.
You're right - this line deserves much more attention. Also, I just checked and Beautyhabit is still carrying Madeleine (panicked there a bit thinking they might have d/ced the line - always such a depressing possibility).

    1. I forgot that BH also carried the line. I've been thinking of the fig one lately. Will be lovely for summer.

    1. Good thing Indigo does have samples. It's not one to buy unsniffed.

  3. I love your review and this house is amazing; I agree they deserve more attention! I was lucky enough to get to know the founders and to interview their nose, Jean Claude Gigodot. I wrote a guide about some of their perfumes (not this one though) for a blog called Luxe Provence. I would link but that's not allowed? I dont want to promote myself so much as share about Au Pays de la Fleur d'Oranger. Anyway it is grey and pouring with rain here in Provence today. Time to dip into my samples. 😀
