Barneys Co-Op Is Creative

This is what I found in my email this morning (click for full effect).

What is that and why am I supposed to want any of it? Can someone please tell me what I'm missing here? Is that makeup? Prosthetic eyebrows? I actually clicked and browsed the entire catalog, where I could see more of the same, but this photo (the front cover of their mailer) was the scariest. I guess looking good no longer sells clothes.

The ridiculous rolled/cuffed shorts on the right are nowhere to be found on the website, though. Maybe the "What Not To Wear" people got to them first.

  1. Sometimes, I think the whole point of the fashion industry is to point out how beautiful the models actually are, but styling them in such a horrible way that only the truly beautiful could actually survive wearning such an ugly look.

Same thing goes for makeup--I for one, don't want to look like a freak and can't look like one because I've got a serious, grownup job!!

  2. The shock factor again...how original!

  3. I think the fashion industry no longer has any idea how to get consumers to part with their cash like it's 1999, so they're just tossing sh*t out there, hoping (praying!) something might stick.

This look, at least, got you talking -- you know, negative attention is better than no attention at all, yada yada.

I received the same email this morning and instantly hit "delete".

  4. I thought it was a spoof of Lohan and Ronson. It's just a guess, though.

  6. Jamilla, it is a freaky look. I can't wrap my mind around the thought process that ends up with this marketing approach. I guess we still buy fashion to look pretty, so maybe we're the freaks...

  7. Helg, you're right. The question is if this approach sells clothes (or makeup). And if it does, why (and what's wrong with us)?

  8. Nathan, yes, it got me and all of us talking. So if that was the purpose, I guess they were right. As far as I remember, Barneys are in dire straits these days. Judging from this, they deserve it.

  9. Dain, it's funny- my husband said the same thing. It didn't occur to me at the time, but you might be right. Because everyone wants to have the SamRo look.

  11. Barny's Co-op is an amazing store. I used to live around the corner from it and I was always peeking in for a little something. The catalog, however, well...I don't get what they were going for here. But, I can tell you the store is incredibly popular with the fashion crowd in NYC where it's located (in SoHo to be exact).

  12. MT, I definitely agree that the catalog is seriously misrepresenting the store. There's a BCO store five minutes away from where I live and I really like their denim selection. The accessories department could use some work.
