Currently- February 2013

Book
Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Writer's Life by Pamela Smith Hill. You'd think there's nothing less glamorous than farm life on the Dakota prairie or in the Ozarks, but Laura was always interested in fashion and in personal grooming.  Incidentally, Laura was born 146 years ago today.

Music
Allison Kraus and Viktor Krauss covering Robert Plant's Big Log

Perfume
So many perfumes, so little time. I've been testing something very interesting over the last few weeks: Christopher Street by Charenton Macerations. I'll review it soon, of course, but in the meantime you can read all about it on IndiePerfumes.

Makeup
Heavy(ish) dark eyeliner, neutral light eye shadows, light natural rose everything else.

Frequently Worn Outfit/Item
Clip-on vintage earrings. I can't get enough of them. My current favorite pair was a gift from a dear friend who magically knows my taste.

Food
Rice pudding. Pudding, in general. It's soft.

Guilty Pleasure
I have no guilt this week. Ice cream for breakfast? I've earned it. See below.

Bane
Dental woes. And that's an understatement.

Joy
Dressing up, going out, seeing friends.

Anticipation
Valentine's Day. It's the anniversary of the Blond's and mine engagement, so it's a special day for us.

Wishlist
Better teeth? Better painkillers? I'll settle for some barely attainable Japanese cosmetics.

Random Thought
I'm beyond excited about the discovery of Richard III's skeleton. But some of those Plantangenet fanatics trying to rehabilitate his name make me shake my head. Next they'll want to revise the order of succession in favor of Richard's bloodline.

How are you doing? Please share your loves, banes and random thoughts.

Art: Marcelle by Christian Schad, 1926.

  1. Looks like Maggie Gyllenhal should play Mrs. Wilder.

  2. Book
I am currently on bed rest with a back injury, so I have plenty of time to read! Currently on my nighttable are The Case for Falling in Love by Mari Ruti, The Color of Style by David Zyla, and Coming to my Senses by Alyssa Harad.

    Music
    Bach on the organ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipe6AB1n6_U

    Perfume
Chanel 31 Rue Cambon and Chateau Krigler 12. Waiting for a decant of Chanel 1932 to arrive in the mail.

    Makeup
Lancome Cherrywood Luxe lipstick. It's my perfect red: a bright, warm vermilion.

    Frequently Worn Outfit/Item
Pajamas and robe. See back injury above.

    Food
    Fromager d'Affinois with truffles.

    Guilty Pleasure
    Lindt chocolate with orange.

    Bane
See back injury above. I was in the hospital for a week, most of it spent in terrible pain. I couldn't celebrate my fiance's birthday this week. :(

    Joy
Not having to shovel snow, on doctor's orders!

    Anticipation
    My birthday, on Monday.

    Wishlist
Some nice Amethyst jewelry. February birthdays mean bad weather, but a great birthstone to make up for it!

    Random Thought
It's going to snow. It's the Northeast in February. It snows in the Northeast in February. It's okay. Really!

  3. You would have loved talking with my mum, then. She belonged to the Richard III Society which was formed to defend his good name after all. The Battle of Bosworth happened not far from where my family lives; it was the last time that the Crown changed hands on a battlefield.

We get very proprietary about our Kings and Queens!

  4. Happy engagement anniversary!
Daughter of Time and The Sunne in Splendour, are
difficult to put down books that also provide
    food for thought on RichardIII.

  5. Book: Look Me in The Eye, by John Elder Robison. John Robison is Augusten Burroughs older, heterosexual brother. However, Look Me in The Eye is not a copy of Running With Scissors, but a complement to R.W.S. It is a fascinating look at Asperger's Syndrome from someone who lives with it successfully. If anything, John Elder's book is more harrowing than Running With Scissors, and I could not put it down!

Frequently worn items: Sweaters (jumpers). Cheaper than raising the thermostat on the central heating. Amethyst stud earrings.

Anticipation: My family coming to Ohio in late March for a family event.

Listening to: Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, and Bruce Cockburn. Cockburn's "Coldest Night of The Year" in particular.

Cooking and eating: Soups and stews! Made a very good low dairy (lactose intolerance here!) "cream" of mushroom soup. Mashed potatoes and a strong broth instead of cream.

My Royal obsession is with the House of Orange, and I was startled, but far from surprised when Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands announced her abdication. This will be the first time in over 100 years that The Netherlands will have a King.

I hope that all the friends of The Non-Blonde blog in the NE United States will stay safe and warm this weekend!

  6. I hope you heal quickly, Gaia. (And I second Daughter of Time for anyone interested in Richard III.)

  7. And here's a third recommendation for Daughter of Time. :)

    Book
I've been reading a lot of Augusten Burroughs lately. At least three books so far. I find him fascinating. My favorite book so far is This is How. And now I think I will have to add J.E. Robinson's book to my reading list, per Lawrence in Ohio's recommendation.

    Music
I've rediscovered Duncan Sheik (remember Duncan Sheik?) and realized that he is a very talented song writer. Nice voice too.

    Perfume
No perfume since I caught a cold last week and can't smell anything. :(

    Makeup
I'm loving the new Armani Maestro foundation and my Lancome lipstick in Beige Silk (natural everyday color).

    Frequently Worn Outfit/Item
J Crew Tippi cardigans over J Crew perfect fit tees. I'm not a J Crew fanatic, but I have to admit they make some great basics.

    Food
    Mostly home-cooked, for a change.

    Guilty Pleasure
I dreamed of magazines last night-- I think I might go pick some up later today.

    Bane
This cold I've had for a week.

    Anticipation
Getting back into a normal work/life routine next week.

    Wishlist
Since I'm loving the foundation, I now want to try the new Armani Maestro concealer.

  8. * Correction: the name of that Lancome lipstick I mentioned above is Buff Silk.

  9. Perfume
None, I lost my sense of smell in August of 2010 - a month or so after setting up my perfume organ and acquiring my educational library for learning the Art of natural Perfumery.

    Makeup
At 66 years of age, I am changing my make-up regimen significantly. Lipstick is exceptionally important as I have gorgeous gray hair. Most lipsticks immediately remove a layer of skin and chap me horrifically. You Gaia have turned me on to lip stains, especially Hourglass over which I can apply a balm, thus avoiding dryness.

    Frequently Worn Outfit/Item
Many pairs of fine well styled hand made French bifocal eyeglasses. As they say, better than a facelift.

    Food
Being a gourmet and superb cook who has lost her sense of taste I no longer enjoy fine restaurants and would prefer a boucle back cheeseburger. I can only taste the 4 flavors: salt, sweet, hot and sour. Well there is now a 5th (umbechi or something - but I do not know it).

    Guilty Pleasure
I have no guilt this week. Ice cream for breakfast? I've earned it. See below.

    Bane
    Inability to mell.

    Joy
Dressing, seeing a play, going to the symphony, a cozy bar with good jazz or cabaret.

    Anticipation
    Taking out of tow trips.

    Wishlist
To have back my sense of smell.

  10. Book: Salt, A World History. It’s fascinating reading.

Perfume: Anything with ambergris. My frequently worn scents have been Straight to Heaven, Eau Des Merveilles and Parfum Prive’.

Makeup: I’m in love with anything teal. My favorites are Laura Mercier’s Caviar stick in cocoa or Laura Geller’s Bewitching Bronze smudged over the lid with a touch of Lagoon as a liner.

Frequently Worn Outfit/Item: An ice pack… see below.

Food: Oatmeal or yogurt, soft foods are my friend.

Guilty Pleasure: Gluten-free dark chocolate cookies, the base is made from black beans, I add cinnamon and cayenne pepper for a spicy chocolaty treat that’s healthy and low-glycemic.

Bane: Dental woes, I’ve had a root canal that went badly-it’s no fun.

Joy: Snuggled in bed with the kitties.

Anticipation: Having a pain-free meal, but that might take a while.

Wishlist: Gaia, I’m with you in wishing for better teeth and painkillers.

  12. Gaia: I believe you must be a bigger fan of the royal family than I am. And that would be a might big fan!
