Currently- June 2014

Book
Wait for Me!: Memoirs by Deborah Mitford Duchess of Devonshire . The youngest of the Mitford sisters writes a latter day Downton Abbey, only real.

Music
Sharon Van Etten.

TV
It's summer, so we're back to watching marathons of home-improvement shows.

Perfume
I smelled something incredible today, Beyond incredible, really. Totally divine, but this story will have to wait a few months. In the meantime I can tell you that I've been enjoying the bottles I picked from the Henri Bendel clearance: Undergreen Black and Sideris by Maria Candida Gentile.

Makeup
Even more eyeliner than usual.

Frequently worn Item/Outfit
A DVF shirt dress in the classic chain print. Goes with everything from heels to flip-flops.

Food
Vanilla milkshake

Guilty Pleasure
That Henri Bendel sale. I love the bargains, especially on stuff I planned to buy anyway, but I do feel guilty to enjoy the demise of a NYC icon.

Bane
I'm going to take a page from my reader Eileen and shrug off any banes. What banes? It's summer, the world looks and feels glorious, there are so many joys, big and small, and so much love.

Joy
Real friends who inspire me, set me straight, and remind me how lucky I am.

Anticipation
I'll show and tell soon.

Wishlist
Home improvements. The guest bedroom is in a dire need of redecorating.

  1. Book
I just finished Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" a couple of days ago so I've started "Examined Lives: From Socrates to Nietzsche" by James Miller. I'm clearly having a moment where I'm missing undergrad. So far, it's fantastic.

    Music
Meh, I can't really think of anything exciting. I should give the new Lana Del Ray a listen.

    TV
    What is TV?

    Perfume
Vintage errythang. My Tommi Sooni Tarantella from the Henri Bendel sale. Vintage Bal a Versailles EDC.

    Makeup
Rose gold eyeshadow, dramatic bottom lash-line eyeliner, bronzed cheeks: my usual summertime face.

    Frequently worn Item/Outfit
It's summer. I hate clothes. Bring back winter so I can just be totally covered up again.

    Food
Tortas milanesa when I want a cheap and cheerful guilty pleasure food.

    Guilty Pleasure
Well, besides food? Online shopping. I just ordered one of those new YSL Couture eyeshadow palettes...

    Bane
    SCREW THIS WEATHER.

    Joy
My friends! Today I had a lovely dinner with my friends, a married couple, and their children and cats. And I learned how to make fry bread.

    Anticipation
My four-day weekend coming up, because I get to see you! And also, it's Baconfest Thursday at this beer garden out in Jersey City that I like. And that YSL palette!

    Wishlist
A cabinet for my perfume bottles that I can afford and that displays everything nicely.

    1. I can't wait for the weekend, either :) And one of these days we're going to have a conversation about clothes. You're too gorgeous to hate clothes.

    2. Book: I just started reading Tami Hoag's "The 9th Girl".

Music: French Impressions with Joshua Bell and Jeremy Denk.

TV: Food Network Star, Master Chef, Hell's Kitchen---I must be hungry! LOL

      Perfume: Tom Ford's Rive D'Ambre.

Makeup: Keeping it light in this heat---Chanel Les Beiges #10 instead of foundation, Tom Ford's Unabashed for eyes and cheeks, Guerlain's Guimauve Vlomp on the lips.

      Frequently Worn Item: Sunhats!

Food: Mixed baby greens, thinly sliced ripe apricots, toasted almonds all tossed together with a light peach balsamic dressing.

Guilty Pleasure: "Penny Dreadful"---I'm such a ghoul! LOL

Bane: Welcome to the No Bane Zone, Gaia :-)

Joy: Life and a loving family and good friends with which to share it.

Anticipation: Seeing my aunt who is spending the summer in the US. She lives in France so I don't get to see her nearly often enough.

Wishlist: I wish I could underline words when writing in comment sections. It drives me nuts using quotation marks when something should be underlined.

      Delete
    3. Yes, sunhats are a must these days, especially with the amount of time I spend at flea-markets and outdoor antique shows. I'd carry a parasol if I didn't need to use my hands.

  2. Vanilla Milkshake? You must be slim as a reed. That would be under Guilty Pleasures for me!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Obviously not as slim as I could have been had I not liked to indulge ;) But seriously, in this weather I'm more than happy to skip a meal here and there in favor of a milkshake. Other than fresh tomatoes there's little I want to eat, anyway.

    Makeup
My Tom Ford eye palettes. All of them.

    Frequently worn Item/Outfit

    Food
Yogurt with fresh fruit and toasted pumpkin seeds and chia seeds.

    Guilty Pleasure
    My new car.

  5. Book: Last weekend, I read Michael Faber's book Under the Skin in one sitting. I wish I had read it before the publicity surrounding the film version made it impossible to be surprised by the initial reveal. I still found it worth reading, but be prepared for a book that is seriously strange, deeply unpleasant, fascinating, disturbing, occasionally funny, sometimes intensely beautiful, and thought-provoking on many levels. Like catching glimpses of oneself in a creepy funhouse mirror that unexpectedly reveals that beauty is as beauty does, or, more often, the converse.

Perfume: Jacomo Parfum Rare Coeur de Parfum. A black chypre meant for colder months but fine for contrarily staying indoors in the AC and reading. Also love Sideris and very glad this line is now available in the U.S.

Anticipation: Finishing up some work and moving to the Bane Free Zone for the rest of the summer!

  7. Ah! Such a fun post Gaia!

Book: Been working on the same book for two months. John Adams. My attention span is meager, still interesting book. I also have a copy of "In Cold Blood" waiting to be read. At this rate, I will get to it in two years.

Music: I rarely listen to music these days and prefer listening to public radio. WNYC is my constant auditory companion.

TV: Not much of a watcher, but started watching Dominion on SciFy. Totally surprised myself and finding how enjoyable such schlock can be!

Perfume: Always looking for roses. Been stuck on TF Cafe Rose, but always on the lookout for something else.

Makeup: Enjoying several concurrent days of no makeup. :) Or no other makeup plus clown cheeks.

Frequent worn item/ outfit: loving Eileen Fisher handkerchief linen pieces from last year still. Love the wrinkly, soft drape. Nice with curves.

Food: I heated up the house by roasting chicken a la Marcella Hazan. It was great. But now I'm so hot I'm going to faint.

Guilty Pleasure: Playing inordinate amount of dopey games on my phone. I think this is the real reason why I can't get through a real book anymore. D:

Bane: the hot stickies of summer. hot oven in the summer!

Joy: Observing all manner of weird wild animals now that I'm in the suburbs. I figured out it is not the deer eating all my deer-resistant flowers. It's some weird groundhog, woodchuck kind of animal I see galloping through my flower beds with short stubby legs. Sad for the flowers, but enjoying the sightings!

Anticipation: a beach vacation to the shore in August.

Wishlist: strangely content these days. I would like a springform pan to make proper cheesecakes with.

    xoxo

    1. In our old house we had a groundhog who lived in the tool shed and ate all our broccoli. We named him Steve, and let him eat whatever he wanted. After all, we could always go to Whole Foods for our veggies.

A jewelry box that actually holds everything in an organized manner. Any ideas? Please?? :)

Just glad this is a short week so I can catch up on some sleep.

    1. I also dream of an organized jewelry box. Instead I have three of them plus three drawers. I try to keep things meticulously organized (one box for bracelets, one drawer for modern stuff, one box only vintage) but the big challenge is remembering what's stored where.

  12. Book: Delicious! by Ruth Reichl. Not as good as I had hoped, not as bad as I had feared. Has a sub-plot about my part of Ohio which turns very ugly.

Scent: A kind friend sent me a LOT of decants and samples. I am loving the Guerlains, and Balmain's Jolie Madame. Rosa del Gata hates, hates, hates Jolie Madame.

Food: fresh cherries! Season here in the States is starting to wind down.....

Pleasure: new shoes, black wingtips by Florsheim. Very comfortable!

Gratitude: It's summer. Even with 89% humidity (almost joking,) and 80+ temperature.....it's summer!

Music: Slaid Cleves (single cut) "Call it Sleep." Gorgeous, rueful, perfect.

Anticipation: sending a few things to a good friend, as soon as I can get to the Post Office.

    1. As long as Rosa del Gata doesn't demand that you wear Drakkar Noir or Giorgio she can hate JM as much as she wants ;) I haven't noticed any of mine caring one way or the other about this one, but Sophie has been showing some interest in Boccanera (Orto Parisi). No idea why.

We've been snacking on cherries almost every night. It's the consolation prize for not living where there's an abundance of fresh figs. And now I'm craving cherry ice cream...
