Cate Blanchett In Dior

Cate Blanchett attended the 'Blue Jasmine' premiere during the 39th Deauville American film festival wearing an ethnic tablecloth from Dior Couture. Neither my love for Cate nor my admiration for Dior could get me behind this look. It's interesting in all the wrong ways. I get that whoever styled Cate Blanchett figured that the dress makes such a statement that hair and makeup should be kept to the bare minimum, but the result is that the gown has swallowed the actress and attended the event without her.

    1. That's exactly what came into my mind as I saw the picture! All oover NO - a dress for a 9th month pregnant lady/crocheted dishcloth/where is the top of the dress/and so on.

  2. Why would Dior do this to her? Poor Cate looks like she is wearing a crochet afghan. But I'm not even sure I'd put that on my couch.

  3. Have to agree with you on this one, much though it pains me. I normally love Cate's risk-taking with fashion and so often it works, even when it seems like it shouldn't, but this definitely looks like she got trapped in side a duster and can't escape. And yes, the softer makeup just emphasizes the fact that the duster's bold colours are overwhelming her more delicate colouring. (Also, it's difficult to tell from the glimpse you get, but the accompanying footwear looks godawful.)

  4. A dress like that really needs a '60s-style, very formal updo - a beehive or something similar.

    1. Hi Murt,

I was thinking the same thing. It's very reminiscent of the type of contrived editorial looks we used to see in the fashion magazines in the 60's. I'm all for retro well done, but Cate just isn't channeling anything except discomfort in this Dior gown.

  5. This is not a dress, this is a residence!

  6. I was wondering if she suddenly was pregnant...or if she's hiding the 7 dwarves under there. lol From the neck up she is lovely at least.

  7. My reaction was similar to fgirl's ... it made me think of one of those crocheted things people throw over couches. She is so incredibly beautiful, this just seems inexplicable. -- Annunziata

  8. I don't know...I actually like the dress, although at first I thought (and hoped) it was cinched in at the waist...but I was wrong. Anyway...even though I'm disappointed in the dress, I think she looks radiant, as always!

  9. I like the print, but she looks like she's wearing a tent. An attention-getting print like that would look much better on a knee-length, fitted shift.

  10. This goes down as a "What were they thinking?" moment.

  11. The pattern reminds me of my grandmother's afghan. This is a total Dior flop.

  12. I guess I like that she takes chances fashion-wise but imo she gets it wrong more than she gets it right. She's no Tilda.
