Cats Of The Day: Introducing Kate & Philip

Our intention was to only adopt one kitten, preferably a female. Last month we lost our oldest cat, Kosh, the Orange Menace, the Dread of NJ Vets. He was 17 and had a long and happy life. It was hard to let go of someone who was the heart and (somewhat disturbed) soul of our family.

The answer is always kittens. After four weeks we felt ready to face the adoption event at our local Petco and bring home a bundle of joy and whiskers. Then we met these two. Philip chose me on the spot, while the Husband was cooing at his adorable and tiny sister. Both purred at us still in the display cage. We couldn't choose, and more important: it was obvious we couldn't separate them. They appeared devoted to each other as much as to the idea of finding a forever home.

We took them both.

As for the names, the Husband had pre-chosen the name Kate. After Katharine Hepburn, not the Duchess of Cambridge. Philip is a name I've loved forever; once upon a time I hoped to adopt a doberman pinscher and name him Philip, but obviously that's not happening. So instead, I have a teeny tiny all black kitten who will eventually answer to this name. Kate is obviously a classic tabby. Yes, she's kind of similar to the triple threat (Marigold, Gemma, and Pippa), except for an all white chest and adorable white paws. They have already started to take over the house. Bob's response is to take a nap.

  6. Kosh will stay with you forever - it's what they do when they leave their furry bodies. Haven't you noticed how cats look at you, then slowly shift their gaze to just over your shoulder? They're looking at their friends already on the other side!

Congrats on your new babies! They are gloriously beautiful and sweet. I'm already in love. Kate is a mackerel tabby, like my boys, Pete and George. Love them. Philip is one of the prettiest black cats I've ever seen. He's going to be gorgeous when he's grown.

    Cheers,

  7. Am so very, very sorry about Kosh. Deep sadness.

Congrats on Philip and Kate! Kittens are one of the greatest joys, wonders of the world. Am really glad you kept them together. I think people often don't get how deeply bonded feline siblings can be. Smiling at Bob's response.

  9. I'm sorry about Kosh. I've always thought our beloved fur babies waited for us on the Rainbow Bridge. I do like Minette's suggestion that they stay with us. And I have seen my cats do that gazing over my shoulder bit. =)

Congrats on the new babies. They are both beautiful. May they share their lives with you for many, many years to come.

  10. Good on you for getting two adorable kittens. Being a dog person myself, I would have loved to see Philip the Doberman, but this is almost as good. I am sure you will be lovely pet parents to them. They are a treat!

  12. It is always sad to lose a beloved pet even after a long lived life but as others have said they stay with us in our hearts.

Congrat's on the two newest members of your community. Both look so adorable and how lovely of you to keep them together. When we got our first dog Luke from the rescue place my husband said we have to get him a mate and so little Sammy came home with us one day. Luke past one and we didn't wait long to get Sam a new partner as poor Sam was clearly mourning the lost of his long time friend Luke.

A happy long life to Kate and Phillip.

  14. How great of you and your husband to rescue two more cats. I'm sure they'll live like king and queen in your home. Both look soooo cute and I wish you lots of pleasure with them!

  15. A huge welcome to Kate and Philip. They will help you heal. When we went to the shelter to adopt one cat, we also came back with two as the lovely four-year old tortoiseshell I had fallen in love with turned out to have a brother - and we all couldn't have been happier.

  17. Very cute! Sorry for your loss...I do understand. We had 4 Maine Coons - 2 boys, 2 girls. Lost one about 3 years ago, then one about 3 months ago - he saved me having to decide by going himself. I have 2 left who are both doing OK - my 16 year old female is a very old lady and senile, then I have a black male who is 14. I figure at some point when I only have one I will adopt 2 kittens from a shelter. They make us laugh every day!

  18. Sadness and joy, and lucky you! How VERY adorable.
Lost my last two cats a year apart, and both 21.5 yrs old. . . . Hard to take as the longest relationship EVER ceased. Still dream of the last one . . .

  20. So sorry about your loss. And love you and your hubby for keeping these two together! I adopted two shelter adult cats (they were friends) about a decade ago and keeping them together was the best thing I've ever done. <3

  21. Thank you for adopting, instead of buying from a breeder.
