YSL Pure Chromatics Wet & Dry Eyeshadows No. 6

I bought YSL Pure Chromatics Wet & Dry Eyeshadows No. 6 mostly because of the gorgeous green, but I admit I had serious doubts about the color combination. It doesn't look like the easiest thing to wear and there's that berry pink one that has "not my color" written all over it. Now, I was right about that particular shade- it would look lovely on just about anyone who isn't me. But the other three colors in this compact more than make up for the bruised shade.

I won't repeat my experience with the formula- you can find it in my review of Pure Chromatics No. 3 . I find that with No. 6 I prefer to use the green and gold dry- they're beautiful and unique enough without taking the extra step, though I might do it for a night out. The dark purple, though, is a wonderful eyeliner when used wet. It's perfect for tightlining and the Yves Saint-Laurent formula is sturdy, stays in place and in this case isn't too shiny/metallic for daytime.

Looking at the swatch of the pink shade on my hand doesn't convey how bad it is on my lid. It actually looks normal and not so pink. It's when I use it on my face that I get the bloody corpse effect. It just doesn't work. The gold is quite warm and not very light. I use it on the lid and can also place it in the inner part, but for brow highlighting I have to add some pearly white or beige, otherwise my eye area looks even more sunken than usual. The olive green is one of those color I wear effortlessly. That's my consolation prize for looking dead in pink. A light or heavy swipe of the green on the lid, blended with the gold or any sand/light taupe or cream color is one of my go-to looks because it makes the dark brown shade of my eyes richer and brighter.

Bottom Line: fun, pretty, wearable.

YSL Pure Chromatics Wet & Dry Eyeshadows No. 6 ($48) is available at Yves Saint-Laurent counters and from yslbeautyus.com.

  1. This is pretty, I like the lighter green color. I thought this would be a little more colorful but still pretty.

  2. Very pretty! Those are my colors too! This will be going on "the list" of things to check out. As you can imagine that list grows by the day. :) I like how you show the shadow difference when applied wet vs. dry.

  3. I have this palette and love the colors! The gold one is my favorite for sure. I really like wearing them wet!

  4. JC, this palette is indeed more subdued on skin than it appears in the pan.

  5. HDtM, there's a significant difference in this formula between wet and dry application. The blue shades of No. 3 are especially stunning when damp.

  6. N., I recently used the gold for an evening look. Loved it.

  7. Perhaps the pink might be integrated as a center-lid highlight within a smoky eye? Not necessarily in black but an off-neutral like bronze or plum or pewter, perhaps in a cream shadow. I sometimes find with those no-way-in-hell kind of shades, they're more wearable when they're applied more editorial, OTT even.

  8. Those colours look really, really gorgeous!! I really don't need more things on my wishlist right now but I think I may just have to try one of these palettes! I only own one YSL product right now which I actually just reviewed. Maybe time to explore more!
Have you tried the pink? Maybe you'd be surprised how it looks when combined with the other shades on you? ;-)

  9. YSL usually fascinates me with the colors, to use them though, I think it is altogether different thing :). I put an eye on the palette #5, look like my "cup of tea", too bad am not so much "an eyeshadow woman", I think, Gaia, I should take lessons from you on how to use eyeshadows :)

  10. I think this is the one I considered but decided against. I wish I could wear that sort of green but it looks wrong on my colouring. Thanks for sharing your pictures. I'll confess to enjoying looking at these palettes, even when the colour way is not for me.

  11. Dain, it's worth a try, though between my skin color and eye shape I see very little hope for this shade.

  12. C., I tried the pink and mixed it with the other colors; looked like a trauma victim. I can wear many shades that are difficult for most, just not these harmless pinks and many a purple.

  13. Goya, thanks so much, you're too sweet :) .
Have you seen the two newest colors, 19 & 20? No. 20 in particular is a warm neutral that might work for you nicely. If I remember correctly, you have a beautiful eye shape that would make many eye shadows look amazing.

  14. J., I know green can be difficult for many. Do have a look at the newest summer shades. Charlstongirl reviewed them on BTiB and I suspect they look lovely on blue eyes.
