What I Missed While I Was In Paris...

It seems like I've missed a few things while I was busy stuffing my face with pastry. Somehow I've managed to be out of the country every year during NY Fashion Week in September. I'm starting to think it might not be such a bad thing considering some of the individuals that troll our streets on Fashion's Night Out:

Also, last Thursday just as I was sitting in the conference room of Serge Lutens Salon at the Palais Royal and savoring the place and the stories, Octavian of 1000 Fragrances was busy announcing Uncle Serge's retirement. I'll talk about this more later in the week, but all I can say is that I wouldn't worry. And, by the way, De Profundis  wears beautifully on my skin.

And last, while the newly launched Perfume Magazine is a welcome addition to the perfume online conversation, the first issue includes an article about perfume blogs by someone who doesn't seem to have actually read any. All I can say is that as long as the mainstream industry keeps churning dreck on a budget I will keep calling the perfumers out on it.  I don't know if the issue is even worth dedicating a full post for this particular article (I'll see how much interest this gets), but you're very welcome to join the discussion on Facebooks. My friends and I will be thrilled to hear from you.

I'll have stories and photos from Paris in the coming days; Is there anything else I've missed?

  1. I don't know if you've missed anything else, but welcome back! I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts on the "retirement" of Serge, and would tune in for your take on the Perfume Mag article as well.

  2. Welcome back Gaia! How was your trip in Paris? I think FNO was hugely advertised and certainly eclipsed NYFW itself. Other than that, it's been a rather quiet week compared to other years.

  3. HI Gaia, I hope you had a lovely time, and am really looking forward to hear more...Meanwhile, I'm so happy De Profundis wears beautifully on your skin, because so it does on mine, and I simply can't understand why it's getting dissed by some bloggers.

  4. Welcome back! It sounds as though you had a fabulous time!

Re: the article -- I did an eye roll but it's my inner editor that nearly stroked out. The disjointed and fractured sentences set my teeth on edge. I expect higher quality text from a magazine, especially when we have blogs like yours, Ars Aromatica, Perfume Shrine, etc, with intelligent and entertaining writing.

    (Sorry about the rant!)

  5. If I was a perfume blogger I wouldn't worry too much about that article. Poorly written doesn't even cover it. It's supposed 'commentary', not a disjointed, incoherent stream-of-consciousness.

  6. Please. Judging from the last picture, you did not meis much.

  7. That article sounds not like he's reading blogs, but like he's reading reviews on makeupalley and searching for "least helpful". It prompted a lot of ??? and general wondering if we're living in the same universe. Also, poorly written to the extent that I'm not really sure what exactly he was trying to say, just that I don't agree.

  8. Wow, who would have thought neon green leggings would ever make it back from the 80's! I wonder who did the seating for the event? For anyone to have the chops to sit that young lady next to Anna W is just hilarious!

You tried DP? And you're bringing a lovely bell jar (or a few) home aren't you??

This may be sacrilege, but if Mr. Lutens is retiring, so be it. He has done such a comprehensive body of work, I think he's more than earned his retirement.

  9. I'm so happy you went to Paris and had a great time, Gaia. I'm looking forward to hearing more about your trip. I did indeed catch that article on The Perfume Magazine's initial "issue", and was dumbfounded. Glad that someone else feels that way also.

  10. I don't know what Raymond Matts actually does for a living but what ever it is, he shouldn't give it up to pursue a career in writing. His article is so poorly written that I can't figure out what he's trying to say. I'll hold off on subscribing to The Perfume Magazine until they hire an editor.

What's with magazines going after bloggers again? There's a piece in Nails Magazine going after nail bloggers. Haven't we done this before?

  11. Gaia -

Welcome back! I hope Paris was as lovely as ever (I love Paris, any time at all:-)

That Raymond Matts 'article' is a Hot Mess. Very poorly written, totally unedited - in short, What Everybody Else Already Said. I mourn the demise of the copyeditor.

And he's apparently not any more of a reader than he is a writer. And the implied assummption that blog readers are so easily led is insulting....unfortunate that the magazine started with such a misstep.

    xo
