YSL Ultramarine Long-Lasting Waterproof Eye Pencil

While I know photos, swatches and reviews of the new Yves Saint Laurent Metal Eyes palettes might be more popular, I really wanted to share this eye pencil first, because there's something interesting about them. If you're a fan of the limited edition Giorgio Armani gel eyeliner pencils and have already used the ones you got to a tiny stub (or you simply might have blinked and they got sold out right under your nose), these YSL liners might cheer you up a little.

I don't know if the formula of the YSL waterproof eyeliners is exactly the same as the Armani ones, but they're exceptionally similar (remember both cosmetics companies are part of L'Oreal)- the gel consistency that gives a liquid-like finish, the intensity, tenacity and ease of use. So far I only bought one YSL pencil, this one in Ultramarine (#3), so I can't do a side by side comparison of the black and other colors, but I suspect it'd be hard to tell them apart. Both Armani and Yves Saint Laurent are waterproof, last from early morning to night without budging and don't smudge.

You need to keep the pencil sharpened for precision (they come with a sharpener in the box, which is very very nice), because otherwise you'll find yourself with a wonky uneven line you cannot smudge. The color sets instantly and stays there, whether you use it on your lid or on your waterline. And have I mentioned yet they're waterproof?

I love the shade of #3 Ultramarine. It's dark enough to give all the definition one wants and yet not too harsh and has a nice brightening effect. I think dark navy blue and very dark green are my best bets for daytime eyeliner colors, not that it would stop me from getting the black and brown once there's nothing left of my poor Armani pencils.

Bottom Line: a must have (and a better deal than Armani).

YSL Long-Lasting Waterproof Eye Pencil ($25) is available from yslbeautyus.com and YSL counters.

  2. Hi Gaia,

    Hope you are well :).

Is there any gray in this line? I usually prefer gray liners to dark blue ones?
    Do you like gray eyeliners?

    Thank you :),

  3. I love the color! I had indeed wished that Armani included a blue one but they didn't. This fills the bill!

  4. I had to lol at your kitty cat. What a dumb sentence that is, but there's no help for it.

I believe it is Gucci Group that owns Armani and YSL, though I know that's mainly the fashion brands.

  5. Jane, I'm sure you're going to like it. Just make sure you have a good makeup remover. This stuff stays on forever :) .

  6. Goya, right now the collection doesn't have a gray. There are two green ones, a purple, a black and a brown.

The nicest gray eyeliner I've seen lately was a cake liner by Laura Mercier. I think Bobbi Brown might have a gel one, and those are always good.

I like just about any eyeliner color that doesn't have a strong red base. Navy is the best for me, but I can and do wear many other colors. I can see why gray would look especially nice on you.

  7. Joolz, I felt the same about Armani. I would have bought every color they released, but now I'm happy with this YSL and plan to get the other colors at some point. And maybe a backup for this blue one. I've been wearing it every other day lately.

  8. Dain, you're correct about the fashion lines, but the cosmetics from both brands (as well as our beloved Shu) are owned by L'Oreal (see this: http://www.loreal.com/_en/_ww/brands-l-oreal.aspx ). I can't say it over-thrills me.

  9. Is that so? L'Oréal has its grubby little fingers in many, many pies. It's sometimes very surprising which brands are owned by whom (in this case, L'Oréal makes sense, being headquartered in Europe), like SKII by Procter & Gamble. Such an odd (but no doubt profitable, SKII is massively successful in Asia) brand for P&G to own.

  10. I have two grays which I usually mix together: Lancome Macadame Gray which is very deep dark gray, but matte and of Chanel Spring collection Le Crayon Yeux Gris Scintillant, which alone doesn't give enough definitionm but put them together and you get a perfect sophisticated gray which emphasizes dark brown eyes so well.
After watching the videos of Lisa Eldridge I had a thought to give it a try to dark blue eye liner (since Lisa and me have practically identical coloring), i think i'll get there some day :)
